Tantrums are common in children 1 to 3 years old. At this age, children are starting to develop their emotional and social skills but are not able to express their feelings through words. So, to let people know that they are frustrated or angry, they throw tantrums.
As the leading preschool in California, we have dealt with our fair share of tantrums. We are experts when it comes to handling tantrums when they happen. Here is what you can do:
- Be calm.
Take a deep breath when you are about to get angry. Do not let your emotions get the best of you. Getting angry will only make the situation more difficult for both of you. Understand that there is a reason for their tantrum.
- Acknowledge what your child feels.
Let them know you understand why they are feeling that way so that you can prevent their frustration from getting more uncontrollable. Give them a chance to restart their emotions.
- Be consistent and don’t reward tantrums.
Make sure that when the tantrum is a result of you saying no, do not give in. This will make them more likely to have tantrums every time you say no. Don’t let the problem get worse.
- Learn to tune in to the emotions of your child.
If you understand them better, you may be able to know when they are about to have tantrums.
