Are you looking for ways to improve your child’s spelling skills and confidence? Then this article is for you. Acceleration Academy is here to share some tips that parents, teachers, tutors, and guardians can use. Let’s get started!
- Stair steps
This technique involves writing words in “stair form”, adding one letter at a time. It’s one of the easiest to remember and understand for the little ones in Child Care.
- Flash Cards
If you have some spare greeting cards or strips of cardboard, you can recycle those and use them as your child’s flashcards.
- On the front part, write down the word, and at the back, list down simple definitions.
- Now your child can independently go through them at their own pace.
This is another common method that teachers at our Children Development Center in Sunnyvale, California use. This is also called “visual memorization” and has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to teach children how to spell.
- Trace, Copy, Recall
This one takes a bit more time, but it’s just as effective. Take a piece of paper and fold it into three columns. On one side, write “trace”, next “copy”, and finally “recall”. Write the word in the first column and ask your child to trace over it. In the next column, have them copy the word. Finally, hide the first 2 columns and ask them to recall the spelling on their own.
